Working on setting up a Wiki and new domain as part of my project around helping others revitalize old technology and discover alternatives to big tech. If anyone is interested in contributing (any role, technical, writing, community management, promoting), drop me a line: hi@thatalexguy.dev

Ugh went to login to DigitalOcean and they've changed their branding to "Agentic Cloud Infrastructure". Yuck.
-
Shit like this is why I hate capitalism: Device hoarding on CNBC. Screw 'em, put Linux on your device and reject buying a new shiny thing.
-
Happy Thanksgiving to those in the United States!

Server migrated off of xmit to a Ubuntu VPS on Digital Ocean.

At 4:26AM this morning we welcomed my beautiful daughter to the world!
-
Ruined my Miyoo Mini Plus, I guess using fast chargers can destroy the screen. Such a bummer, really liked that little guy.

You know what's not impacted by today's Cloudflare outage? Most indie sites and blogs!
-
Slowly migrating off of Github to a self-hosted Git server on my Synology NAS. Tired of the Copilot garbage.

Yeah, big web has gone to crap, but it's amazing how alive and vibrant small web is. I frequently read great posts from interesting people across blogs, gemini, gopher, pubnix systems and the ferdiverse. And the best part is, you can typically assume no LLMs were involved in writing found on the small web.

This should (hopefully) post both as a mumble on my blog and a post on Mastodon. Fingers crossed!

My Ubuntu dock has a lot more apps in it than my Mac's dock...I feel like there's a lot more Gnome apps that I've fallen in love with and consider essential. I'll have to write a post on my favorites!

Stayed up too late last night throwing togther a "interactive fiction"/adventure style game on my website (it's live on the homepage!). It's simple, but I had a lot of fun with it. Reminded me of the maze text-adventures I used to make as a kid with Hotpaw BASIC on my Palm Pilot. I'd spend hours drawing each room on paper, then coding it into a massive multi dimensional array.

I'm really bad about flip flopping between tech (ie iOS <-> Android and Mac OS <-> Linux). In other news...I'm back to iPhone. Thankfully kept my old iPhone when I switched to the Pixel, I'm one of the few that really likes iOS 26.

Dug into the Vala source for a Gnome app I love, Folio, and managed to add a feature that was bugging me (auto set the title of a note to the first header on save if the title is still the generic default). There's really something special about being able to modify software you use to better fit your needs.

I've spent 3 hours working on a client project with this Surface Book 2 running Ubuntu and it has been rock solid. Seriously impressed. This machine is a lot more fun to use compared to my M1 MacBook Pro.
-
Put Ubuntu 25.10 on my old Surface Book 2 15", holy crap it's so good. With the surface kernel, EVERYTHING works. Even the camera! I've always loved the screen and keyboard on this computer. Just goes to show you don't need the newest hardware, a nearly 10 year old computer is just fine.

Did my civic duty this morning and voted, was in and out in 5 minutes.

I try to avoid the news, but I randomly stumbled upon a video on Reddit of coward ice agents smashing into someone's car and dragging them onto the street. In no world is that shit acceptable. If you're someone that supports that, then seriously fuck off. It's not politics, it's being a god damn human.

Zwift is my version of World of Warcraft. You go on raids (group rides) with your clan (club), level up and get new mounts (bikes) and finish off the session with some PvE (races).
-
Doing some quick consistency updates on the site. Really enjoying this mumble feature! Hitting Zwift next for some virtual pain.
-
It's Friday night and I'm sitting here reading the BBEdit manual...To be fair, it is a really thorough and well written manual!
-
And here's another one for good measure! I'll admit, was tempted to use an LLM for the bash script, but glad I stuck it out. Learned a lot. Stay don't love bash scripting.

Posting my first mumble! Built a CLI script to make posting a mumble super easy!
